In South Australia, more than 300,000 people are affected by gambling harm in many different ways.
The way we talk about gambling and gambling harm can influence how people think, feel and behave. There is evidence that the words we often choose when talking about gambling contributes to the embarrassment, shame, low self-esteem, and guilt felt by those who experience gambling harm. Language can perpetuate stigma and discrimination and create barriers to help seeking.
It’s important that we change the conversation and use words that are kind, respectful and acknowledge the strength it takes to ask for help.
We have worked with people with lived experience to help tell their story of how language affected them. These videos will be seen on digital platforms during Gambling Harm Action Week. Other resources such as posters social media tiles and a language guide can all be found below.

Gambling Harm Support SA is launching a new campaign featuring short videos form the perspectives of people with lived experiences of gambling harm and how unhelpful language impacted their help-seeking journey.
